Opening the Google Play Store for more car apps

In October, we published the Android for Cars App Library to beta so you could start bringing your navigation, parking, and charging apps to Android Auto. Thanks for sending your feedback with our issue tracker, so we know where to improve and clarify things. Now we’re ready to take the next step in delivering great in-car experiences.



Today, you can publish your apps to closed testing tracks in the Google Play Store. This is a great way to get feedback on how well your app meets the app quality guidelines, plus get your in-car experience in front of your first Android Auto users.

Updating Wear OS Google Play Store policy to increase app quality

The Wear app review process, which has been in place since the launch of Android Wear 2.0, is currently optional. It will become mandatory for apps to be listed on the Wear OS by Google version of the Google Play Store from the following dates: New Wear apps: 1 October 2018 Existing Wear apps: 4 March 2019 . The review process for mobile apps remains unchanged, and is independent of the Wear app review. Mobile app updates will not be blocked if they fail the Wear app review. We hope this lightweight app review process will improve the quality of Wear app experiences across the wide range of devices available to your users. Identifying Intrusive Mobile Apps using Peer Group Analysis

But these apps could also seek more device information than they need to do their job, such as personal data and sensor data from components, like cameras and GPS trackers. To protect our users and help developers navigate this complex environment, Google analyzes privacy and security signals for each app in Google Play. We then compare that app to other apps with similar features, known as functional peers . Creating peer groups allows us to calibrate our estimates of users' expectations and set adequate boundaries of behaviors that may be considered unsafe or intrusive. Indie Games Accelerator - Applications open for class of 2019
